Chapter Six

Two Police Officers are standing at the front door of the apartment building watching as Ms. Braithwaite shoves Tameka out of the front door while she’s adjusting her shorts. “Hey gimme a chance ta button up my damn shorts ya freak.” Then Ms. Braithwaite shoves the fumbling Thomas out the door carrying as many of his belongings as he can.

“Now Ms. Braithwaite, I though we had an understandin'. I was suppose ta eat some of yo chitlin's… Ms.Braithwaite pats her pussy. “You ain't gonna never get a chance ta taste my chitlin's, baby. Now gwaan, git out.” Tameka jumps in “Don't nobody wanna eat ya old funky ass wrinkled up chitlin's.”

Thomas composes himself and slowly walks down the street with his suitcases. Tameka minces along behind him. Ms. Braithwaite yells at them both, “Go eat her Hollywood Boulevard street walkin' chitlin's. Everybody else has. “ Braithwaite, the neighbors and the policemen all laugh.

Tameka tries to keep up with Thomas. “It don't feel good gettin' throwed out of your apartment, does it?” Thomas doesn't respond. Tameka keeps talking “This is the second time in six hours I been evicted.” Thomas still doesn't respond. Tameka struggles to keep up. “I'm sorry I kneed you in the balls.” Thomas finally speaks. “You had every right ta knee me in the balls. I ain't have no business puttin' my hands on you.”

“So, where you going?” Thomas doesn’t look at Tameka. “I'ma call my boy and his girl and hit 'em up for a loan.” Tameka thinks about that strategy. “I tried that too. Nobody wants you when you're down and out.” Thomas still won’t look at her. “Whatever you say, Bobby Womack. Would you like something to eat?” Tameka is grateful he isn’t going to dump her like the little photographer did. She grabs Thomas' arm. “Yea. I’m starvin’.”

Tameka and Thomas walk up to Sunset Blvd and then down several blocks past the KTLA Television Studios and then cross the street to a twenty-four hour diner. Tameka and Thomas stumble into the diner and plop down in a booth. They’re both exhausted from carrying their suitcases. Tameka looks the place over. “So how are we gonna eat when we ain't got no money? Thomas picks up a menu. “I told you I'ma call my boy and his lady and hit 'um up for a loan.”

“Just 'cause you call 'em don't mean they'll come. They might be busy doin’ somethin’. It is Saturday night.“ Thomas doesn’t understand what she means. “That's what friends are for. You call 'em and they come runnin'.” Thomas takes out his cell phone and starts dialing then he chuckles.

“Oh, I forgot; you ain't got no friends.” Tameka fires back, “I got friends. I got lots of friends.” Thomas puts the phone to his ear. “Who let you sleep on a strange man’s couch.” Tameka agrees. “You strange alright.” Thomas in annoyed “Just get somethin ta eat.” Tameka reluctantly grabs a menu.

It’s forty-five minutes later and Tameka and Thomas have finished their dinner but Thomas’ friends haven't arrived yet.
